Peasant's Daily Life
They lived in very simple mud brick houses. They decorated their homes with limited amounts of woven mats.
Their typical meal included onions, cucumbers, fish, homemade bread, and water or beer. Peasants rarely ate meat, unlike the upper class. Also, in times of famine, they boiled tough papyrus plants for food. They enjoyed river games that involved knocking each other off the papyrus rafts. Holidays were celebrated before planting and after harvesting. Their holidays also involved honoring the gods. The end of the year for peasants was when harvest season ended. In honor of the end of the year and the end of harvest season the peasants gathered up as much leftover grains as they could, and they kept it for food.
But, the end of the harvest season could be when they get punished for a poor harvest. Farmers payed their taxes by giving the system crops. If the farmer's harvest was short and couldn't pay their taxes, then they were brutally beaten.
